(The Dream)

What Is Home? is a feature documentary about a generation that grew up believing freedom meant movement. Cheap flights, remote work, passports, surfboards and friends scattered across continents made it possible to build lives between places rather than inside one place. Moving through surf towns, mountain villages, islands, deserts and cities, they searched for waves, snow, work, love, community and inspiration. For a while, it felt like they had cracked the code.

(Gypset)

The film follows what Julia Chaplin described as the Gypset generation: people who blurred the boundaries between work and life, sophistication and simplicity, ambition and escape. They could move between Paris and Biarritz, New York and Bali, a professional world and a barefoot dinner on the beach without feeling they had crossed into another identity. They did not necessarily want the biggest house or the conventional career. They wanted the house at the end of the dirt road, an empty wave outside, mountains in the distance and friends from ten countries around the same table.

(Both Worlds)

Eventually, the dream produces its own conflict. The freedom that allowed these people to reinvent their lives also made staying increasingly difficult. Once you have experienced multiple cultures, communities and versions of yourself, you cannot completely unsee them. Through Laure, torn between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the life she has built in Byron Bay; Ebba, between Sweden and the mountains; Eurico, between Portugal and a life elsewhere; and others whose identities cross borders, the film asks what happens when the instinct to keep moving collides with relationships, family, ageing, responsibility and the desire to belong.
