One wave. Plenty to work on.
Surf Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch in California, where an engineered wave brings a different rhythm to a day on the board.
The appeal is not simply the wave. It is the chance to pay attention to your surfing: a cleaner take-off, a better-timed turn, a section you approach differently. A familiar shape gives you something to learn from, even when the ride does not go to plan.
Surf Ranch changes the usual conversation around a surf trip. Instead of studying swell forecasts and searching the coast, you focus on the wave in front of you and what you want to do with it. Watch other riders, notice their timing and choose one thing to bring into your own session. Between turns, there is time to catch your breath and talk through what happened. The wave may be engineered, but the concentration, effort and satisfaction are entirely your own.

California surfing. A long way from the beach.
In Lemoore, in California’s Central Valley, Surf Ranch puts a surf destination where you would not expect to find one.
There is no ocean horizon here. The contrast is part of the experience: inland California, an expanse of water and a wave that draws everyone’s attention as soon as it starts moving.
Developed with Kelly Slater, Surf Ranch offers a different expression of the sport he helped shape. It takes the idea of a carefully formed wave and makes it the centre of the day, far from a conventional coastal break.
You still recognise the familiar rituals. Wax on the board, a last look at the water, friends watching from the side. What changes is the setting and the way the session unfolds. Rather than treating the pool as a replacement for the ocean, enjoy it as another way to surf. The coast has its own unpredictability; the Ranch offers a different challenge. Finding your timing on an engineered wave can be just as absorbing as learning a new break.

Bring the friends who talk about their last wave.
For surfers who want a focused experience, a fresh challenge and good company between sessions.
Come with something you would like to improve and enough perspective to enjoy the attempts that do not quite work. The best companions celebrate a good ride and make a missed section easy to laugh about.
Be honest about your surfing ability when arranging the visit. Confirm access, the available wave settings and the session format before travelling, so the experience is suited to your level and expectations.
Surf Ranch visits depend on confirmed booking arrangements; do not assume casual walk-in access or a particular number of waves. Check the current requirements, equipment arrangements and any coaching options with the organiser. Once those details are settled, bring fitness for the water and a willingness to listen to the session team. Keep your goals simple, enjoy watching your friends and leave room for a ride that surprises you. The day is about more than getting the photograph.
